L’admiració cap a l’escola finesa atreu a Eva Marmi Tarrés a viure a Hyvinkää.

Eva, pomppimaan! Eva, a saltar!

                                                                          --------------------------------------------

Au pair already knows what “puisto” means

I know one other au pair here in Hyvinkää and in Jarvenpää, I know a couple of them, tells a spanish au pair Eva Marmi Tarrés. With the help of the Internet, the aupairs find each other, but the authorities don't have an idea of how common the au pair are. From de Departament of immigration you get a permit of residence and from tax office you get a tax card, but the job is not itself in any statistics.

From the experiences of Kukka Ankeriasniemi, who hired an au pair, people don't ask very often any help in hiring an au pair. If they would ask, they would know better.

Now, for example, getting a tax card and calculating the right salary, asks for a bit of clearing and patience. But, seeing the happy faces -it is worth it- Marmi has very fast became a part of the Ankeriasniemi family.

Carefully! says Eva Marmi Tarrés, who has came to Finland to work as an au pair. During the first month, she has already learned the most essential words of everyday life, so that I can cope with the children.

Finland’s admired school attracted Eva Marmi Tarrés to Hyvinkää.

Eva, pomppimaan! Whoops Väinö Ankeriasniemi and heads towards the trampoline. This is a Finnish word that also Eva Marmi Tarrés understands. And that’s a good thing, because they have bounced a lot lately. Marmi works as an au pair with the family Ankeriasniemi, helps with some daily tasks and learns Finnish. She has learned Finnish a lot already, mainly some words that she needs in everyday life, such as pomppimaan, kengät, pyörä, puistoon and varovasti. Using those words Marmi plays with the children, and takes the youngest children, Väinö and Ahti, to daycare and preschool. With the children it is ok to lack a common language. You can communicate non-verbally a lot. Children are flexible in that, Marmi considers.

Even so, she is learning Finnish with the help of the family, but she has also just started a Finnish language course. After just one week, she rolls her eyes and laughs: Finnish is a difficult language! You have a lot of long words that are impossible to write!

During her one year of visit, Marmi wishes to get to know to the Finnish culture and learn those seemingly impossible long words. She is soon going to visit Helsinki and the traditional Finnish summer cottage. Mutually the au pair shows her own culture to her host family. They have spent one evening with the neighbors and that’s when Marmi cooked some traditional Catalan food and told about her culture. Maybe she told about how noisy it is in Barcelona, where she studied compared with Finland.

Marmi enjoys the peace and nature of Finland. She is very keen to ride a bike, and has taken over Hyvinkää with her bike. She praises the bicycle roads of the town. She has also seen weird habits in Finland: - Finnish people have weird times to eat. They eat lunch already at noon!, she laughs. In Spain, it is not rare to have lunch at 3 pm, and the dinner might be eaten very late in the evening.

Newly graduated as a teacher in special education, Marmi wanted to go abroad after her studying. By working as an au pair, she is able to combine enhancing her level of English as well as working with children. She ended up in Finland, because she, as a teacher, is interested in the admired education system of Finland.

After one month of visit, Marmi has become tightly a member of the family. – Their home is now my home. This is my other family, she says and host mother Kukka Ankeriasniemi agrees. Yet the authorities demand a written contract of employment, and the rules were agreed already before buying the flight tickets. But Ankeriasniemi does not feel that Marmi is just an employed in the family. She has been accepted as a family member. Even the 5-year-old Väinö talks about “our Eva”.

As you can see we have a celebration. This time the here of the day was the smallest child of the house. He was one year older. So we prepared a birthday party for him.

On this day his wishes became true because the birhtday hero wanted a police car (poliisiauto) as a birthday cake. So his mother made this great work of art, amazing! The typical birthday cake has  three layers: there is banana and whipped cream between the first and second layer and strawberries and whipped cream between the second and third layer. The cover of this cake was made of marzipan in different colours, so the cake was fully edible.  Congratulations for the mother, because the cake was very good :)

Before we ate the cake, the guests sang the birthday song. Then the birthday hero  blew the candels on the cake. Here is the birthday song  in diferent Language and they have the same rhythm. So I encourage you to try singing it in Catalan or Spanish ;)

After we have eaten the cake, the children did the typical game for birthday party: to put the tail on the donkey (aasinhäntä). Each child wrapped up his o her eyes with a handkerchief, made some returns around himself or herself to be disoriented, and then put the tail where she or he believed that the tial should be. Usually the animal is a donkey, but there are different alternatives such as a dog or a cat.

The other typical birthday game is called "onginta", fishing. But not fishing the fish (kala) in the fantastic lakes in Finland; this time it is the children fishing surprises in the form of a lucky dip. The children go up high in such a place, that has some space for fishing below it, for example a balcony. You can even play this game using just a curtain screen; the idea is that the children will not see what they are fishing. In this game, you need a "fishing rod" (any stick will do), a small basket and a string that is tied between the rod and the basket. To play this game, each child throws the little basket down (or behind the curtain screen) and waits for the basket to "dive" (indicatind the fish bite). Then he or she picks up the basket with the surprise inside. Usually the surprises are candies, small toys or stickers. Each child will then repeat the fishing action in turns, until there is nothing in the basket.

Benvinguts! Bienvenidos! Welcome! Tervetuloa!

Kiitos!

My experience as an au pair has begun, and I arrived in Finland the last week of July. In this blog, I will publish the culture, traditions and anecdotes, to show some fantastic places and tell about what it is like to live in Finland.

It seemed ideal to begin this blog with this picture, since it was also shown at nit catalana, the party that I organized with my host family last Saturday. We invited some friends, relatives and neighbours of the host family, and introduced to them some highlights of Catalonia. The guests discovered where and what Catalonia is and what are the typical meals, habits, cultural events, great places etc. in Catalonia.

The house was temporarily altered to a museum, where the guests could find different informative texts that were randomly hanged on the walls of the house: first of all beautiful places in Catalonia, such as La Costa Brava, Barcelona, Muntanyes de Montserrat and Vall de Núria; and secondly, the culture and traditions such as Traginers, la calçotada, la Patum de Berga and el Caga tió.

The menu (ruokalista) of the party was as following: Bread with tomatoes (and olive oil) accompanied with ham called pernil salat, sausage called llangonissa from butcher Marmi and manchego cheese. We also had some Catalonian omelette with potatoes and onion. To accompany this meal, nothing would have been better that some red wines from Catalonia (Savia Viva, Raimat, Perelada). However, the best dish was the dessert called crema catalana, the Catalonian milk pudding.  One of the guests requested me the recipe... so the “crema catalana” where ever it goes, it wins! And to create more Catalan atmosphere, the guests could listen to typical Catalan songs.

It was fantastic, because the guests made me feel very comfortable, and they enjoyed the nit catalana.

Thank you very much! Kiitos!
